Sainte-Foy's unique architecture

Authenticity, charm and tradition blend harmoniously in the soul of a mountain village. From the earliest hamlets to the present day, the people of Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise have carefully preserved the elegance of their architecture. Here, every stone and every detail whispers the story of a rich, living mountain past, where traditions endure, shaping the warm, authentic soul of Sainte-Foy.

A living mountain heritage

The architecture of Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise is a perfect blend of simplicity and beauty, in harmony with the surrounding nature. The traditional houses, built of wood and stone, are decorated with columns that add a touch of elegance to the facades. The lauze roofs, made of carefully laid flat stones, are designed to withstand the harsh mountain winters. This warm, authentic style uses local materials to create solid, welcoming homes that seem an integral part of the Alpine landscape.

  • Where do Sainte-Foy's column houses come from?

Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise’s column houses, which you can admire in the heart of our resort, are much more than a mere architectural detail. They were originally designed to meet the practical needs of the valley’s inhabitants. The columns, often made of wood, support balconies and porches, providing a secure place to store hay or farming tools.

The columns also protect the houses from dampness, while allowing air to circulate freely. This architectural style reflects the ingenuity of mountain builders, who combined functionality with aesthetics. Inspired by traditional Savoyard chalets, these homes blend perfectly into the Alpine landscape, with their wood and stone facades creating a warm, authentic setting.

  • Architectural specifications handed down from generation to generation

Concerned with the architectural harmony of the resort and its integration into the community, the project sponsors agreed on the definition of architectural specifications. All construction had to comply with these specifications, which have become the hallmark of Sainte Foy’s charm. Every detail was considered, from the height of the buildings to their construction materials. Here, lauze roofs ensure aesthetic harmony with the surrounding mountain landscape, as do the stones adorning the chalets. The famous columns have also become an essential part of these specifications, being imposed on every new building.
